Press Release: Livermore Police Dept.

The Livermore Police Department would like to inform the community about important new

legislation in California regarding the protection of children in vehicles.

On Tuesday, October 4, 2011, Governor Brown signed into law Senate Bill 929 which will

require that children riding in any vehicle must be restrained in the back seat in a child

restraint until their 8th birthdayThe Livermore Police Department was instrumental in

getting this new law passed. Personnel with expertise in child safety restraint systems

testified before the Senate and Congress at the State Capitol. This new law brings

California up to similar standards that have been in place in at least 30 other states.

Studies have shown that children are far more likely to be restrained in age-appropriate

restraints, such as car seats and booster seats, if State law requires booster seat use for

their age group. Many people rely on state laws to guide them in determining how to best

protect their children.

California’s current child restraint law only protects children that are under the age of 6 or

weigh less than 60 lbs. After January 1, 2012, those vulnerable 6 and 7 year olds will be

required to stay in their car seats or booster seats until they reach the age of 8 years old.

For the complete law that will take effect January 1, 2012, follow the below link.

http://www.leginfo.ca.gov/pub/11-12/bill/sen/sb_0901950/sb_929_

bill_20111004_chaptered.pdf

After January 1, 2012, a violation of this section will be punishable by a fine of nearly

$500.00 and one point on your driver’s record.

The number one killer of children in the United States is vehicle collisions. The Livermore

Police Department wants to help parents best protect their children while they are traveling

in vehicles. Deaths are just the tip of the iceberg. Young children are too small for seat

belts that are made to fit adults, and are subject to severe injury or death if improperly

restrained.

Restraining a child with only a seat belt is putting them at risk for serious injury. If the belt is

across the child's waist instead of across the hips or thigh bones, they could suffer damage

to internal organs and/or a spinal cord injury if involved in a collision.

Booster seats are 60 percent safer than seat belts alone. A booster seat is a child restraint

that raises a child up so that the vehicle's lap-shoulder belt is properly positioned across the

strong bones of their body.

The Livermore Police Department would like to provide parents with this simple 5-step test

to confirm if a child over 8 years old can safely ride in a seat belt alone, and not use a

booster seat.

5-Step Test:

Can your child….

1. Sit with his/her back flat up against the vehicle seat

2. while his/her knees are bent naturally over the seat cushion edge

3. with the lap belt across his/her hip or thigh bones

4. and the shoulder belt across his/her shoulder (not crossing over his/her face or under

his/her arm or, behind his/her back

5. and, his/her can stay seated in that position the whole trip ?

If your child cannot achieve all 5 steps above, they need to stay in their booster seat.

Four Key Safety Points:

1. Restrain your child on every trip, every time.

2. Keep your child in the back seat.

3. Use the best safety restraint for your child's size.

4. Use the child safety seats and belts correctly.

The Livermore Police Department has a free monthly car seat fitting station and is happy to

check your child’s car seat/booster or seat belt fit. To make an appointment call (925) 371-

4858.

PTO NEWS

Happy New Year!  As we begin 2012, it is time to start planning for Sunset's largest fundraiser of the year, the Annual Sunset Gala.  We hope to continue the tradition of success and fun as we bring "Diamonds and Denim" to Livermore.  Mark your calendars for Saturday, March 17, 2012 from 5:00pm to 11:00pm at the Ruby Hill Country Club.

Each year the Gala is a huge success thanks to the generosity of Sunset families and friends.  To do this we need to have great baskets and auction items.  Not sure how you can help? Here are some ideas:

- Time at your weekend cabin, vacation home or timeshare
- Airline tickets, frequent flyer miles
- Private lessons or services in cooking, sports, the arts
- Coupons for activities like shopping, tourist spots, movies, etc.
- Collectable items such as sports jerseys, game balls or Hollywood memorabilia
- Tickets to events - sports, arts, concerts, etc.
- Unique and creative experiences not offered anywhere else -- have a friend who happens to be a celebrity? Behind the scenes tour of a unique business? A private dinner in a wine cave? Let us know if you have an idea or think you have something to offer, we can help build it into the Gala.
- Have a service you can offer? Massage, facial, hair styling, landscaping, house cleaning, auto tune up, etc.
- Find out if your company has a charitable matching program or is willing to offer their product or services.
- Think about friends, family members or business contacts to see if they might have something they would be willing to donate. Many times, those contacts that we are hesitant to ask, are the most generous.

Thank you to the parents who have offered to be a Basket Coordinator for their class!  Our first Basket Coordinator Meeting will be this Friday, January 13th at 8:35am in the ESS room.

Every item that is donated to the Gala is tax deductible.  We have a team of Sunset parents that can help facilitate your donation.  For more information or donation questions, contact Asha Kello.

We are looking forward to a fantastic event. You know what they say, "What happens at the Gala, stays at Sunset!"

Thank you for your support!

Parking and Valet Safety

Please utilize the available drop-off valet service.

Please note that the outer edges of the parking lot are now marked STAFF parking.  Please allow our staff to use these spaces. Please use only the unmarked center spaces for  book club, fun runners, and general parking.

Please drive safely! Keeping kids safe is a priority at Sunset School. There have been some recent injuries to students at several of our local schools.

Safety Tips -In order to keep traffic moving,  pull all the way to the end of the line/driveway to the car in front of you or to the last valetDo not park in the driveway or cross walks.  Your car can be towed if left un-attended.  Children should wear their seatbelts until the car comes to a complete stop. Children should exit on the right side of the car. Avoid putting backpacks in the trunk.  Children should have their backpacks on the floor board in front of them. Drivers and pedestrians should not wear headsets, talk on cell phones or text in order to stay fully aware.

When driving on surrounding streets,  do not drop your children off in the street. Avoid double parking or parking on street corners of the nearby residential streets such as Kingsport Way. Please do not turn left into the driveway from Frankfurt Way. Please be courteous to the valet student and parent volunteers.

The Livermore Police regularly patrols the school areas and will write citations for unsafe driving in a school zone.  Those citations can cost between $50-$280.

Please help keep the children of Sunset safe and drive safely!
