May Principal's Message

Salutations Sunset Families:

STAR Testing has begun for grades 2nd-5th.  STAR Testing is highly important because student performance on the test is used to calculate our Academic Performance Index (API) score.  Currently, the API score for Sunset is 923, the highest in the Livermore Valley Joint Unified School District.  I would like to request your help in promoting our children’s best efforts in testing.  Please ensure your child gets enough sleep during testing, and please ensure your child is at school every day on time.  STAR Testing will take place from April 30-May 11.  We will get the state testing results in the summer. Click here to view the STAR Testing FAQ document.

Our students have been learning rigorously, and you will have an opportunity to visit their classrooms during Open House which is scheduled for May 24th from 6:30-7:30 pm.

We are coming close to the end of the 2011-2012 school year; it has been a fabulous year due to the ongoing support of our parents and community members.  We are very grateful for the immense support we receive and to express our appreciation WE will be hosting a Volunteer Appreciation event on May 16th;  invitations and details will follow.

"If you want to touch the past, touch a rock.  If you want to touch the present, touch a flower.  If you want to touch the future, touch a life." ~Author Unknown
                                                                   Sincerely,
                                                 Kuljinder Sekhon,  Sunset Principal

Important Health Concerns

FROM THE DESK OF YOUR SCHOOL NURSE:

We have been seeing an increase in the number of absences due to illness recently.   The Centers for

Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends some ways you and your family may keep from getting sick at school and at home:

Cover your mouth and nosewith a tissue when you cough or sneeze.  If you don’t have a tissue, cough or sneeze into your elbow or shoulder; not into your hands.

Practice good hand hygieneby washing your hands often with soap and water, especially after coughing or sneezing. If soap and water are unavailable, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol to clean hands.

Stay home if you or your child is sick for at least 24 hours after there is no longer a fever or signs of a fever (without the use of fever-reducing medicine).   Stay home for 24 hours after vomiting or diarrhea.  Keeping sick students at home means that they keep their viruses to themselves rather than sharing them with others.

Let’s have a happy, healthy Spring!

Important Reminders

Call In Absences

Please remember to call in an absence

to the attendance line, (925) 606-5231.

Students who have perfect attendance

(no absences and no tardies)

will receive a perfect attendance award

at the end of the school year.

Lost and Found

The lost and found area in the MPR is filling

up.   If your child has lost a jacket or lunch box,

please take a few minutes to stop by and check

the lost and found.   As the weather begins

to change and get colder,  don't forget to label

your jackets and lunch boxes so they can be

easily identified.

FUN RUNNERS

Fun Runners meets every

Monday, Wednesday and Friday:

Kinders:  8am - 8:10am

Grades 1-5:  8am - 8:25am

Students do not need to sign up

for Fun Runners - they just

need to show up!  The program

is free.  Fun Runners is canceled

if it is raining or if the conditions

are too slippery.  Please no

drop-offs prior to 8am!
